Student Corner: Town of Yanceyville/NC STEP – Small Business Grant Program

By CED Program Interns & Students

Published June 20, 2011

Libby Hodges recently received her Masters in Public Administration from UNC and is currently serving as a CCP intern working with the Town of Yanceyville in Caswell County, NC.

This post reports on one of the promising programs funded by the North Carolina Small Town Economic Prosperity (STEP) program and the N.C. Rural Economic Development Center.

As businesses face a continually challenging economic climate, this grant may provide a much-needed boost in available funds that will not have to be repaid.  The field for these grants is wide open, as the Town will accept applications from existing businesses or entrepreneurs looking to locate within the Yanceyville town limits. Each grant will be for $4,000, with four expected recipients. Applicants are asked to provide matching funds of $1,000 in order to be eligible for the grant awards.

The use of the funds is also wide open, as scoring will be based on such diverse impacts as job creation and retention, business plans, re-use or improvements to historic buildings, façade improvements, expansion of current services, minority status, Chamber or Commerce members, marketing enhancements, and overall strengthening of the business by the grant funds.  Approved projects will be awarded at the July 12th Council Meeting at the Yanceyville Municipal Building.

Applications and additional information is available on the Town of Yanceyville website, in the Yanceyville Municipal Services Building at 158 E. Church St. in Yanceyville, or by calling (336) 694-5431.  Applications will be accepted until July 8, 2011 at 5pm by the Yanceyville Town Manager.

It will be exciting to see what kinds of proposals local business owners and entrepreneurs will submit!
