Student Corner: *UPDATE* CCP Provides Small Grant to Promote Healthy Lifestyles Among Caswell Youth

Kendra Cotton is a Project Director with the Community-Campus Partnership Program.

The Community-Campus Partnership has awarded a small grant in support of  three UNC graduate student researchers working to explore the social, structural, and environmental factors that facilitate or prevent County youth from achieving a healthy lifestyle.

The research team (Peter Balvanz, Leilani Ogan and Jeff Quinn), responding to the concerns of citizens and County Commissioners in Caswell County, is partnering with area youth in a community-based participatory research (CBPR) project where participants work together in carrying out the research. Broadly speaking, county high school students, with assistance from the UNC team, are using photography to record their daily life in an effort to consider these general questions:

  • What helps me be healthy?
  • What gets in the way of me being healthy?
  • How much exercise do I get each week, and in what form?
  • How do I spend my free time?
  • What do I typically eat during meals and for snacks?

More information on the project can be found in this earlier post.
